Designs, develops and improves new and existing mechatronics systems in conformance to customer specifications.  Directs fabrication, conducts build and directs testing of prototypes.  Analyze design concepts for fit, function, manufacturability and ease of assembly.  Coordinate engineering activities between the Customer, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Sales/Marketing and the supply base.


  1. Develop new and innovative products for advancement of Means Product offering. 
  2. Design and/or direct CAD Operators in the design of new products for development cycle only. 
  3. Direct CAE operators to complete complex analyses for development projects.
  4. Complete backup calculations to insure correct CAE results.
  5. Verify that designs meet anticipated customer specifications and requirements through analysis and testing.
  6. Coordinates the fabrication of prototypes.  Assemble prototypes and document builds in conformance with customer/internal requirements.
  7. Establish test requirements and procedures, prepare product test plans, direct product testing, review test results and prepare reports.
  8. Prepare preliminary engineering cost studies.
  9. Assist with preparing design FMEA’s for new products when required.
  10. Liaison with Means manufacturing facilities and external suppliers during development phase to insure new designs can be manufactured.
  11. Prepares and maintains timing charts for various program phases if project is specific to customer.
  12. Participates actively in design review meetings and helps stimulate positive engineering discussion.
  13. Acts as a Team Leader for development programs and as a mentor for co-op/summer engineering students.  Helps guide and monitor others that are on the team to ensure goals and timings are met.
  14. Prepares and participates in formal training and technical presentations for internal personnel.
  15. Helps prepare marketing and competitor analysis studies to aid in strategic planning and capital programs.


Education:     Bachelors in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering Required.


  • 3+ years preferred in an Electrical and or Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering field.  Applicable Co-op experience can count.
  • Powertrain knowledge preferred
  • Knowledge and skilled in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics preferred


  • Excellent communication skills with ability to effectively communicate across multiple facets of the organization and outside of the organization.
  • Kowledge of Arduino and Spice.
  • Able to fully characterize electromechanical actuation systems:
    • Solenoids
    • DC motors
    • Electromagnetic
    • Sensors (Hall, Inductive)Knowledge of PCB assembly and testing
  • Knowledge of CAN or LIN communication preferred but not required
  • Matlab/Simulink or equivalent
  • Detailed knowledge of:
    • Over molding
    • Coil winding
    • Soldering
    • Crimping
    • Potting
    • Mechanical properties of magnets
    • Thermal effects on actuators and PCB’s
    • Electromagnetic compatibility
  • GD&T
  • Stack analysis techniques
  • Be able to use Mathcad or Matlab to complete complex analysis calculations
  • Extensive knowledge of materials and heat treat processes
  • Knowledge of how to design for the following processes:
    • Casting
    • Powdered Metal forming
    • Stamping/forming
    • Forging
  • Detailed knowledge of:
    • Spring design
      • Compression
      • Torsional
      • Belleville
      • Wave
    • Bearings
    • Bushings
    • Threaded connections
    • Retaining devices such as snap rings
    • Spline and gearing calculations
