We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

Fermilab’s Applied Physics and Superconducting Technology Division (APS-TD) is seeking an Engineering Physicist. Under the general direction of a more senior Engineering Physicist, Engineer, or Scientist utilizes a fundamental knowledge of physics, together with problem-solving skills and an understanding of engineering, to design moderate to complex components, processes, and systems with a proficiency in the use of some of the following: modern analytical tools, software and hardware development, integration and testing, design of microelectronic circuitry, and the physics principles used in modern scientific, chemical, and mechanical and/or engineering applications.

You will

  • Provide support for lab experiments, test stands, equipment, components or sub-systems operations at: Vertical Cavity Test Facility, Quantum Laboratory, Cavity Tuning Machine, Optical Inspection Setup and other APS-TD facilities;
  • Design, develop, integrate, verify operations and troubleshoot electronics systems and component for scientific experiments and tests stands;
  • Operate facilities or equipment’s as part of design or commissioning systems;
  • Monitor tests and examine operations of facilities to isolate and define problems with proper functioning of equipment and to insure efficient functioning and conformance with safety specifications and regulations;
  • Plan and assist in inquiries to discover facts or to test hypotheses concerning the equipment or system in assigned area;
  • Evaluate findings and develop plans and improvements to meet project or operation goals that bring a project to operating status;
  • Detect irregularities of a system through a complete understanding of a system and its subsystems;
  • Interact with other specialists to coordinate the modification and repair of the system and to propose new, improved or upgraded systems;
  • Select and apply appropriate engineering standards to meet assignment objectives;
  • Determine vendors and technologies for performance evaluation;
  • Implement modest changes in scope as required according to predefined change control procedures based on analytical results;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

We are looking for

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD Degree in physics or engineering physics with electronics background; or Electrical or Electronics Engineering with physics background. Higher level degree preferred;
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work experience;
  • Experience in electronics or automation system design and operations;
  • Knowledge and hand on experience of methods and techniques for measuring electrical signals, components parameters, physical properties etc.;
  • Experience with at least one of the following devices: FPGA, DSP, Microcontrollers, Embedded platforms  or DAQ;
  • Experience with test data processing and analysis;
  • Experience with CAD tools: electronic circuits schematic drawing, PCB layout, circuit simulations;
  • Experience with programming at least in one of the following: C, C++, C#, Python, LabVIEW or other;
  • Experience with PLC systems (preferred);
  • Field experience coordinating technical staff (e.g., scheduling, setting priorities, etc.) or experience as a student Instructor, teacher, lecturer or similar role;
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English with technical personnel, non-technical personnel and users;
  • Hands on experience with:
    • electronics measurement equipment and instruments;
    • electronics troubleshooting, repairing, prototyping;
    • RF equipment (preferred);
    • SRF measurements (preferred),
    • Superconducting electronics (preferred),
    • Measurement Instruments Remote communication (preferred);
  • Ability to solve technical problems by applying best engineering practices;

Relocation is available for this position.

  • Ability and willingness to work additional hours beyond the normal workday and respond to call-ins based on operational needs.
  • Ability to legally operate cars and light trucks.
  • Ability to travel by commercial air carrier both domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs of up to fifteen (15) flights (i.e., ~ 225 steps).
  • Ability to traverse uneven, slippery surfaces.
