Job Description

LBNF/DUNE in South Dakota FSCF Internship

We are:

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.  We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international flagship experiment to unlock the mysteries of neutrinos. DUNE will be installed in the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF).

Fermilab is the host laboratory for DUNE, in partnership with funding agencies and more than 1,000 scientists from all over the globe. DUNE consists of massive neutrino detectors at Fermilab in Illinois and Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota.

A LBNF/DUNE in South Dakota FSCF intern is an undergraduate engineering student majoring in mining and related fields who is interested in working at a major underground construction project or a business student interested in learning more about construction procurement and management. Eligible students must be enrolled in a four-year college and university in the United States. While providing an opportunity to the student to gain understanding and experience of underground excavation, construction, and management, the intern will assist the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), Far Site Conventional Facilities (FSCF) project with overseeing and documenting construction progress and supporting procurement and management activities. The selected candidate(s) will work directly under the mentorship of a LBNF FSCF employee.

The position(s) will provide an opportunity to work on exciting projects in the field including, but not limited to, drill and blast excavation, ground support installation, shotcrete and concrete construction, ventilation design and layout, and other aspects of underground construction.

For business majors, the program supports procurement and management activities for either the LBNF FSCF procurement team or the South Dakota Services Division.

Intern(s) will be based at the Sanford Lab in Lead, SD.
