We Are

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

Fermilab seeks staff level Cryogenic Engineer to support expanding project needs and existing cryogenic system operations. The candidate will work in a team environment under the supervision of a more senior engineer or scientist.  This position will support cryogenic projects within the Cryogenic Sector of Fermilab.  This includes cryogenic support of the Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) which is a new leading-edge superconducting linear particle accelerator under development at Fermilab.  This accelerator’s high intensity proton beam will power a broad range of particle physics experiments for decades to come with the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the universe.  Project tasks can include thermal, hydraulic and structural analysis, cryogenic process design and analysis, cryogenic component design, in-house or vendor oversight of fabrication, installation and commissioning.

 Activities of the position may also include operating helium cryogenic systems, performing and developing operating procedures, troubleshooting system problems using investigative engineering, improving cryogenic operations through process engineering improvements and upgrades, maintaining and responding to alarms, coordinating system maintenance and improvement plans.

We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited institution, Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field is strongly preferred
  • A strong academic background in engineering thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat transfer
  • 3-5 years of engineering experience
  • Working in a team environment
  • Knowledge of helium cryogenic systems
  • Must be available for operational off-hour call-ins and occasional project overtime
  • Collaborate with technical staff to verify system functionality and performance utilizing strong oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to see the big picture and pay attention to details while performing problem solving analysis on a flexible range of project tasks
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and process flow schematics
  • Ability to use a computer for performing engineering analysis, writing reports, and creating presentations
  • Must meet qualification requirements to work in an oxygen deficiency hazard or interlocked area
  • A cryogenic related thesis project is strongly preferred
  • Experience with operating helium cryogenic systems is preferred
  • Superfluid helium cryogenic experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Codes is strongly preferred
